Elk River YMCA

On September 12, 2006 Elk River Voters approved a tax increase that would pay for 2/3 the cost of a new YMCA to be built in Elk River Minnesota.  The vote in favor of the Elk River YMCA was won by a 142 vote margin.  A coordinated "Vote Yes" effort was launched weeks in advance by supporters of the new Elk River YMCA.  The tax impact for the owner of a $200,000 home in Elk River is about $100.00 per year.  Local fitness related businesses were opposed to taxpayer funding of the new Elk River YMCA which could likely draw some of their clients.  The YMCA will be located near Orono Park in Elk River and be financed by the city of Elk River selling $12 million in bonds.

The Elk River YMCA would feature an indoor aquatic center with pools for therapy and instruction.  Modern fitness facility with jogging track and sauna and spa amenities.  The Elk River Star Newspaper is reporting that the Elk River YMCA may open in September 2008.
